Time for Presents!

A couple of weeks ago, Rosemary gave us a list of all the kid's names, ages, and gender. We decided what we could spend on each child and went shopping! It was fun and hard at the same time. Shopping here is not what it is in the US. You pay a lot more for quality toys. And we wanted to try to get things that would hold up since we knew these are mostly likely some of the only toys they will have. So, we ended up with coloring books and crayons for all, Hotwheels for the little boys and flashlights for the bigger boys, baby dolls for the little girls and some girly lotion, jump ropes, toothbrushes, and toothpaste for the older girls, bubbles and an orange for all. We separated all the gifts and made a bag for each child.
John carrying a big bag of gifts from the van while Justin and Pastor Morris get the boys lined up from oldest to youngest.
Dinah made it about half way with her bag.
The boys lined up. There were 8 children who weren't there yesterday because they had left on Saturday to go to court today. Rosemary does not have custody of those 8 yet and that's a big deal for her not to get into legal issues with the children. We left the gifts for those 8 and they will receive them today.
The girls all lined up with Aimee.
They weren't like any American child I've ever seen open a present. It was a very slow process and some of them we even had to show how to take the wrapping paper off.
Our kids really enjoyed handing out the gifts.

The girls with their baby dolls. Do you think they liked them??
The boys had to unwrap and then open their Hotwheels boxes. Took them a little longer to get to their main gift.
And the boys with the flashlights had to have some help to get them ready to go.
 He found his Hotwheels.

Nathan thought I would have to show them how to use them, but they knew exactly what to do.
John checking out what was in the bag, too.
They didn't realize there was an orange in each bag until we told Rosemary and she told them all in Kiswahili.
Some of them didn't know how to eat it, so I helped peel about 4 or 5 of them. Some of them cut it open with a knife and tried to chew out the inside. We really wanted to take each of them an apple, too, but ran out of cash when we were at the store.
The little girl in the orange dress is nicknamed "Mommy". It was quite funny, but it was one of the easiest names to remember.
They all were carrying their babies around on their backs.
Nathan was helping the boys get their flashlights working.
 Enjoying their Hotwheels.
Pastor Morris and Rosemary. She asked me to take their picture and I snapped it before they could stop smiling. Ha ha! Remember I said they don't like to smile for their pictures. I told them we like to smile for all our pictures to show how happy we are. Pastor Morris is Rosemary's right hand man. While she is working in Nairobi during the week, he's at the orphanage. He handles paperwork and whatever they need at the orphanage while she is away.
